Wuppertal is a medium size german city located 20 kilometers east of Dusseldorf. It has 350,000 inhabitants.
Its metro system is very characteristic, a suspended monorail, unique in Europe.
The first and only line of Wuppertal Wuppertal Suspension Railway became operational in 1901 with the section between Kluse and Zoo.
The Wuppertal Schwebebahn, as it is known, moves 25 million passengers per year. It is the oldest monorail transport system with wagons suspended in the world. It is an unique system. Over a distance of 13.3 kilometers, the light rail in Wuppertal flows through the Wupper Valley area between the two terminal stations: Rittershausen (currently Oberbarmen) and Vohwinkel, floating above the Wupper river for 10 kilometers at 12 meters above the ground. The section between Sonnborner Straße and Vohwinkel, above the streets of Vohwinkel, circulates at 8 meters along a distance of 3.3 km.
An end to end trip takes about 30 minutes and serves 20 stations.

Hours and frequency
The frequency at rush hour is ,Monday to Friday, 4 minutes, 6 minutes on Saturdays and Sundays and holidays 8 minutes. After 21:00 the frequency decreases to 15 minutes. The hours are 5:20 am to 23:00 p.m. The schedule chart can be checked out online.
There are 18 trains running during rush hour and regular times. Only in the evenings / nights there are 11 trains.

A single ticket for the monorail in Wuppertal costs 2.5€ for adults and 1.5€ for children.

Curious facts
All stations are 13 meters wide and 25 meters long.
The only original station is the Central Station.
It is one of the systems affected by the 2nd World War, where it was damaged. Just a year after war service operated normally.
Only Kluse station,that was completely destroyed, was rebuilt much later, in 1999.

It is one of the safest transportation systems in the world.
This system was used by the last German emperor, Wilhelm II
Tuffi the elephant, also traveled in the monorail. She destroyed the car where was being carried, broke windows and jumped into the river Wupper.
