Duisburg Stadtbahn

The Duisburg Stadtbahn is a light rail part of the German rail system covering the Rhine-Ruhr area. Duisburg is a city in North Rhine-Westphalia, where the confluence of the Rhine and Ruhr rivers is. The city has more than 500 thousand inhabitants, but rather small Stadtbahn network compared with that of Essen and Dortmund, neighboring cities. It is also integrated in the VRR tariff zone.

The Duisburg Stadtbahn operates since July 92.

The initial design planned 2 routes in Duisburg, an east-west reaching Mülheim and another north to south connecting with Düsseldorf.

Lines and stations

The Duisburg system consists of a Stadtbahn line and 2 tram lines.

Line U79

Stations: Meiderich Süd Bf, Duisburg Hbf, König-Heinrich-Platz, Grunewald, DU-Kesselsberg, D-Wittlaer, Kaiserswerth, Heinrich-Heine-Allee, Düsseldorf Hbf, Oberbilk S/Philipshalle, Kaiserslauterner Straße, Universität Ost/Botanischer Garten. It’s 17 kms long.

Tram lines

It’s 43.4 kms of routes in total, of which 7,5kms are shared with the U79.

Line 901. Stations: Obermarxloh Schleife, Marxloh Pollmann, Beeck Denkmal, Laar Kirche, Ruhrort Bf, König-Heinrich-Platz, Duisburg Hbf, Zoo/Uni, Mülheim-Speldorf, Mülheim (Ruhr) Hbf.

Line 903. Stations: Dinslaken Bf, Du-Walsum, Marxloh Pollmann, Hamborn Rathaus, Meiderich Süd Bf, Duisburg Hbf, König-Heinrich-Platz, Hochfeld Süd Bf, Wanheimerort, Hüttenheim Schleife.

Tickets and fares

Duisburg is part of the VRR tariff system (Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr). A single ticket for adults and children costs € 1.60

Hours of service and frequency

Stadtbahn line U79 towards Düsseldorf and trams 901 and 903 operate from 4:30 to 00:00, with a frequency of 10 minutes during the day and 15 minutes at night.
