Frankfurt U-Bahn: Overview

The Frankfurt U-bahn is just a part of the efficient and comprehensive transportation system for this city. Known as U-Bahn, it’s a 64,9 kilometers long, has 9 lines and 87 stations. U-Bahn trains are actually urban trams. Over a half of the systems routes circulate underground. Complementing this system, there is a network of suburban trains called S-Bahn and trams.

Of theese nine lines all pass through the center but line U9.

  • Line U1: Ginnheim, Römerstadt, Nordwestzentrum, Hauptwache, Willy-Brandt-Platz, Südbahnhof
  • Line U2: Bad Homburg-Gonzenheim, Ober-Eschbach, Nieder-Eschbach, Bonames, Hauptwache, Willy-Brandt-Platz, Südbahnhof
  • Line U3: Oberursel-Hohemark, Oberursel, Niederursel, Hauptwache, Willy-Brandt-Platz, Südbahnhof
  • Line U4: Enkheim, Schäfflestraße, Seckbacher Landstraße, Bornheim, Konstablerwache, Willy-Brandt-Platz, Hauptbahnhof, Festhalle/Messe, Bockenheimer Warte
  • Line U5: Preungesheim, Eckenheim, Hauptfriedhof, Konstablerwache, Willy-Brandt-Platz, Hauptbahnhof
  • Line U6: Heerstraße, Bockenheimer Warte, Hauptwache, Konstablerwache, Ostbahnhof
  • Line U7: Hausen, Bockenheimer Warte, Hauptwache, Konstablerwache, Eissporthalle, Hessen-Center, Enkheim
  • Line U8: Riedberg, Niederursel, Hauptwache, Willy-Brandt-Platz, Südbahnhof
  • Line U9: Nieder-Eschbach, Riedberg, Niederursel, Nordwestzentrum, Römerstadt, Ginnheim

Frankfurt U-bahn schedule and frequency

It operates from 4 am to 1:30 am, every 3-4 min in rush hours; every 7-8 min in the rest of the day and every 10 min after 10 pm.
Some lines have a night train that runs every 20 min.

Travelling without ticket would cost you a 40€ fine.

Connection to the airport

The airport is connected to central Frankfurt by S-Bahn. To get to the city you have to take lines S8 or S9 from Regionalbahnhof station in Terminal 1.
If you want to go to the airport by S-Bahn, take the S8 or S9 lines in the direction of Wiesbaden to arrive to F-Flughafen (airport station).

Curious Facts

The Hauptbahnhof station is one of the biggest of Europe.

Providing information about vandalism to Frankfurt Metro is rewarded with 500 euros.

Bikes in Frankfurt U-bahn

You can take your bike on the subway without paying a separate ticket. But carrying the bike depends on how crowded it is the car. The driver can always decide that you have to wait for the next train. You have to use the metro entrances in which an icon indicating a bicycle appears.
