Vienna Metro

It is one of the most modern metros in Europe. It was inaugurated on May 8, 1976. It is known as the U-Bahn. Its length is 69.8kms and there are about 5 kms more currently under construction. There are a total of 100 stations.

Vienna Metro has 5 lines. Almost all paths are underground, except for the U6 that is partly circulating by surface.
We might use the underground (U-Bahn), tram, railway (S-Bahn) and bus with the same ticket as it is an integrated fare system, which makes it very easy and quick moving around the city.

Vienna Metro stations

Line U1 (Red line).
One of the longest in the network. Line U1 connects the east with the center-south of the city.
It has a station next to the Cathedral, and another near the Prater. It has 19 stations on its route of 14.6 kms.
Stops: Leopoldau,Grossfeldsiedlung, Aderklaaer Strasse, Rennbahnweg, Kagraner Platz, Kagran, Alte Donau, Kaisermühlen, Donauinsel, Vorgartenstrasse, Praterstern, Nestroyplatz, Stubentor, Karlsplatz; Taubstummengasse; Südtiroler Platz, Keplerplatz, Reumannplatz.

Line U2 (purple line).
It is the shortest line and goes from the east side to downtown. Useful to visit the Prater, the Church of St. Charles Borromeo and the Museum Quarter. It has a length of 7.8 kms and is currently being expanded almost 5 kms more.
Currently there are 16 stations.
Stops:Karlsplatz, Museumsquartier; Volkstheater, Rathaus, Schottentor, Taborstrasse, Praterstern, Messe-Prater, Krieau, Stadion, Donaumarina, Donaustadtbrücke, Stadlau, Hardeggasse, Donauspital, Asperstrasse.

Linea U3 (Yellow line).
This line goes from the South-East to the western side of the city. They are 13.5 kms and 21 stations. In his tour around the city is the Sisi Museum and the Imperial Apartments.
Stations: Ottakring, Kendlerstrasse, Hütteldorfer Strasse, Johnstrasse, Schweglerstrasse, Westbahnhof, Zieglergasse, Neubaugasse, Volkstheater, Herrengasse, Stubentor, Stephansplatz, Landstrasse, Rochusgasse, Kardinal-Nagl-Platz, Schlachthausgasse, Erdberg, Gasometer, Zippererstasse, Enkplatz, Simmering.

Line U4 (Green line).
This line is used by most visitors to the city because it covers all the downtown and the major monuments of the city, including the Schönbrunn Palace. It’s length is 16.4 km with 20 stations
Stations: Hütteldorf, Ober St. Veit, Unter St. Veit, Braunschweiggasse, Hietzing, Schönbrunn, Meidling Hauptstrasse, Längenfeldgasse, Margarettengürtel, Pilgramgasse, Kettenbrücken-gasse, Karlsplatz, Stadpark, Landstrasse, Schwedenplatz, Schottenring, Rossauer Lände, Friedensbrücke, Spittelau, Heiligenstadt.

Line U6 (Brown line).
It is the longest line of this metro system, with 17.5 kms and it has more 24 stations. Goes through the city from north to south in the west side. It doesn’t go through the downtown, so it is not very useful for tourists.
This line is in service since 1898 and belonged the old pre-metro system. It goes through the viaduct old Vienna.
Stops: Floridsdorf, Neue Donau, Handelskai, Dresdner Strasse, Jägerstrasse, Spittelau, Nussdorfer strasse, Währinger strasse, Michelbeuern, Alser Strasse, Josefstädter strasse, Thaliastrasse, Burggasse, Westbahnhof, Gumpendorfer strasse, Längenfeldgasse, Niederhofstrasse, Philadelphiabrücke, Tscherttegasse, Am Schöpfwerk, Alterlaa, Erlaaer Strasse, Perfektastrasse, Siebenhirten.

Frequency

The frequency depends on the momment of day. It varies from 2-4 minutes in rush hour to 7-8 minutes afterm 20:30. On Friday and Saturday nights and the eve of public holidays metro lines operate 24 hours every 15 minutes.

Vienna metro tickets and fares

• Single ticket: 2 €, valid for metro, buses and trams. The ticket can be obtained at the offices of the Wiener Linien, tobacconists and kiosks.

In addition there are various tickets that allow unlimited use of public transport during its validity.

• 24 hours ticket: 6,70€.
• 48 hours ticket: 11,70€.
• 72 hours ticket: 14,50€.
• Weekly ticket: 14€. (Valid from monday to monday)
• Viena Card:
  it is valid for unlimited public transports for 72 hours. Also discounts at major museums, monuments in Vienna are available if you purchase this ticket. Can be acquired at the airport, hotels and tourist offices. It costs € 19.90.
• Optional 8-day Ticket: 33,90 €. (Valid for 8 no consecutive days and can be shared)
• Monthly ticket: 45 €.

Tickets can be obtained at Wiener Linien offices.

During school holidays in Vienna and on Sundays and holidays children under 15 can travel for accrediting their identity.
Children under 6 years always travel for free in public transports in Vienna. Bicycles can be carried on the subway for half price, except during rush hours.
