Yokohama Municipal Subway

Yokohama, the second largest city in Japan, has a 2 lines metro system to serve its 3.4 million inhabitants. Located just 30 kilometers south of Tokyo, it works in conjunction with several urban trains such as the Sotetsu and Keikyu lines.

Operating since April 12, 1972, its 2 lines, which originally where 3, the blue line and the green line, serve 42 stations. The length of the system is 53.4 kms. The system is managed by Yokohama City Transportation Bureau. There are plans to extend the blue line.

Yokohama Subway lines and stations

The 2 lines and 42 stations, identified by name and color are:

Blue line

The blue line in his initial approach was two separated physical lines, the 1 and the 3, intersecting at Kannai. Currently it works as a single line from Azamino in the North to Shonandai in the south. ust 7.6 kilometers of this 40,4 kms line are underground. The line serves 32 stations, of which only 5 are on the surface: Center-Kita, Center-Minami, Nakamachidai, Nippa, Kaminagaya. Travel time from end to end on the blue line requires 66 minutes. All stations on this line are named with a B.

Stations: (Line 3:) Azamino, Nakagawa, Center Kita, Center Minami, Nakamachidai, Nippa, Kita Shin-yokohama, Shin-Yokohama, Kishine-kōen, Katakurachō, Mitsuzawa-kamichō, Mitsuzawa-shimochō, Yokohama, Takashimachō, Sakuragichō, Kannai, (Line 1:) Isezakichōjamachi, Bandōbashi, Yoshinochō, Maita, Gumyōji, Kami-Ōoka, Kōnan-Chūō, Kaminagaya, Shimonagaya, Maioka, Totsuka, Odoriba, Nakada, Tateba, Shimoiida, Shōnandai

Green line

The green line or line 4 is operating since March 2008. It serves from Hiyoshi to Nakayama. It’s 13.1 kms of track serving 10 stations. This line was intended to be a loop line. although currently is not working as such, in the near future the project could be completed. Transfers can be made between these lines in Center Kita and Minami Center. All stations on this line are named with a letter G.

Stations: Nakayama, Kawawachō, Tsuzuki-Fureai-no-Oka, Center-Minami, Center-Kita, Kita-Yamata, Higashi-Yamata, Takata, Hiyoshi-Honchō, Hiyoshi

Line 2

Line 2 was planned to link Kanagawa-Shinmachi Station to Byobugaura Station.

Line 3

Line 3 would begin at line 1 termini Azamino and would end at Shin-Yurigaoka. It is still in planning stage

Other Yokohama subway lines

Minatomirai line depart from Central Station. It is 4.1 km long and has been operational since February 2004. The Metro operates in conjunction with the Tokyu Toyoko suburban commuter railway, which runs from Yokohama to Shibuya in Tokyo, taking 35 minutes to complete the trip.

The Kanazawa Seaside Line runs completely autonomously and elevated through its 10.6 kms route.

Hours

Yokohama Municipal Subway works from 5:30 am to 00:00 am. Frequency of services ranges from 5 to 6 minutes during peak hour.

Tickets and fares

The rate is calculated on the basis of-traveled areas. In total there are 6 areas. Tickets can be purchased with cash or with a PASMO card.

  • zone 1 from 0 to 3 kms
  • zone 2 from 3.1 to 7 kms
  • zone 3 from 7.1 to 11 kms
  • zone 4 from 11.1 to 15 kms
  • zone 5 from 15.1 to 19 kms
  • zone 6 from 19.1 to 23 kms

Curious facts

You can take a bike or a surfboard provided that they are within their respective bag or case. Small pets in their cages. Guide dogs are allowed.

There arear women only wagons in the blue line.

In the Yokohama subway there are priority seating in “non-mobile” areas, reserved for the elderly, pregnant, disabled and others

There are power-off areas in the metro where you can not use the phone. In these areas you have to turn off the phone.

Maternity marks. Particular caution not to use these seats.
