Bucharest Metro

Bucharest, capital of Romania, has the largest public transport system in Romania and one of the largest in Europe.
It is run by Regia Autonomă de Transport București (RATB) since 1909. The system includes a bus network (autobuz),
tram (tramvai), trolley bus (troilebuz) and the metro system (Metrou).

Metrou lines and stations

Bucharest metro is a network 69.25 km length of double track with 4 metro lines (M1,M2,M3 and M4) and 51 stations.
There is also a Line M5 will open in 2017. Lines M6 and M7 are just planned.

    • M1 line (yellow): this line was the first one in 1979. It has 22 stations and 31 kms length. Run from Pantelimon to Dristor.Stations:Piaţa Muncii, Piaţa Iancului, Obor, Ştefan cel Mare, Piaţa Victoriei, Gara de Nord, Basarab, Crangasi, Petrache Poenaru, Grozăveşti, Eroilor, Izvor, Piata Unirii, Timpuri Noi, Mihai Bravu, Dristor, Nicolae Grigorescu, Titan, Costin Georgian, Republica, Pantelimon

Stations: Pipera, Aurel Vlaicu, Aviatorilor, Piaţa Victoriei, Piaţa Romană, Universitate, Piaţa Unirii, Tineretului, Eroii Revolutiei, Constantin Brâncoveanu, Piaţa Sudului, Apărătorii Patriei, Dimitrie Leonida, Berceni

 

  • M3 line(red): it has fifteen stations, from Preciziei to Anghel Saligny. It’s 20 kms long.Stations: Preciziei, Pacii, Gorjului, Lujerlui, Politehnica, Eroilor, Izvor, Piaţa Unirii, Timpuri Noi, Mihai Bravu, Dristor, Nicolae Grigorescu, 1 Decembrie 1918, Nicolae Teclu, Anghel Saligny
  • M4 line (green): It’s seven stations, from Laminorului to Gara de Nord along 6,2 kms of tracks.
    Stations: Străuleşti, Laminorului, Parc Bazilescu, Jiului, 1 Mai, Grivita, Basarab, Gara de Nord
  • M5 line (orange): It will be fourteen stations, from Ghencea to Universitate. (Open aprox. in 2017).
    Its already under construction.

Fares and Tickets

As you can see, public transport in Bucharest is very cheap as goverment featherbeds. Metro use magnetic stripe cards.

  • 2-trip metro card costs 4 RON
  • 10-trip metro card cost 15 RON
  • 1-day pass unlimited cost 6 RON
  • 7-day pass unlimited cost 20 RON
  • Month-pass limited cost 50 RON (62 rides / calendar month)
  • Month-pass unlimited cost 60 RON (unlimited rides / calendar month)
  • Month-pass unlimited for students cost 30 RON (Romanian universities)
  • Month-pass limited for students cost 25 RON (62 trips, Romanian universities)
  • Citizens over 70 years old travel free.

*1 RON = 0,22€

Schedule and frecuency

Hours of operation: Metrou trains operate from 05:00 to 23:00 from monday to sunday.

We could say that Metrou Bucharest as a frequency of 3 to 7 minutes during peak time, and from 15 to 20 minutes off-peak.
But depending on the line we can be a little bit more specific:
Peak time

  • Lines 1,3,4: 6 to 7 minutes
  • Line 2: 3 to 5 minutes

Peak off

  • Lines 1,3: 8 minutes
  • Line 2: 9 minutes
  • Line 4: 10 minutes

Connection to the Airports

Bucharest airports are Henri Coandă International Airport and Aurel Vlaicu International Airport.
Henri Coandă International Airport is 16.5 km north of Bucharest center on the DN1, in Otopeni. The worst option to get
to the city is by train. But you can get taxis, private cars and the buses 780 and 783 that has a 30 minutes regular service in the day time,
and every 40 minutes in the night time..
Aurel Vlaicu International Airport is a business and VIP airport. It is located 8 km north of the Bucharest city center. To get to the
Bucharest center you can take RATB buses numbers 131 and 335, and also de Bus Airport Express 783. RATB tramway 5 is also availabe and taxi.
