Charleroi is a french-speaking city in Belgium located 70 kilometers south of Brussels. Its population is greater than half a million inhabitants in its metropolitan area. The Charleroi Metro was previously known as Premetro Charleroi. Now is the Charleroi light rail (in French Métro léger de Charleroi). It really is a network of premetro: trams that run underground in the city center and at surface level in dedicated areas where possible and where not, by viaducts. So trains/trams streamline their travel to not get caught in traffic jams or congestions.

As of 2013, the network of Charleroi Metro consists of 48 stations, of which 24 are premetro stations and the other 24 are tram stations. They are also served by the underground. Currently Charleroi Metro is a loop line around the center of the city and two branches to the districts of Gilly and Anderlues. A third branch that goes to Chatelet is partially built but never came into service.

In the 70’s a much more extensive and ambitious network project was planned to be completed by the middle of the 90s.
The original design consisted of a central loop which connected to the 8 branches that would serve the entire city of Charleroi. Due to the high cost of implementation of the project and the estimated low volume of passengers, the construction was suspended leaving the network in a semi completed state. The city center loop was completed in 2013 by adding a section of tram to Gosselies.

The completion and opening in 2013 of the loop led to a restructuring of the system. The 5 premetro/tram lines already in operation (54, 55, 84, 88 and 89) were replaced by 4 metro lines: M1, M2, M3 and later M4. The system extension grew from 25kms to 35kms and a total number of 48 stations of which 10 are underground.

The current system started its works in 1976. The ‘métro léger’ is operated by TEC.
The maximum speed in the system is 65 km/h.

Charleroi metro: lines and stations

Charleroi Loop

The central loop of Charleroi metro is the real “metro” part the system in the sense that circulates at a different level, underground or in a dedicated via and meets the common standards of most subway systems. It has 8 stations that are common to the 4 metro lines: Sud, Villette, Ouest, Beaux-Arts, Waterloo, Janson, Parc and Tirou.

Lines M1 and M2: Andelues Line

It stretches from Anderlues to Charleroi. They’re 6 premetro stations and 6 tram stations circulating at different levels. This line is 14 km long. The difference between these two lines is direction. M1 travels counter clockwise. Stations: Piges, Dampremy, Providence, De Cartier, Moulin, Morgnies, Leernes, Paradis, Fontaine, Pétria, Coron du berger, Surchiste, Route de Thuin, Jonction, Route de la Station and Monument.

Line M3 or Gosselies line

It stretches from Gosselies to Dampremy circulates. It has 18 tram stations plus 1 premetro station, Piges, also served by the line M1 and M2 and not included in the following list. This line became operational in 2013. The route runs clockwise. It’s a 7.5 kilometer route. Station: Sacré Madame, La Planche, Deschassis, Marie Curie, Saint Antoine, Puissant, Chuassée de Gilly, Rue Berteau, Madeleine, Carosse, Bruyerre, Calvaire, Rue Léopold, Chuassée de Fleurus, City Nord, Emailleries, Rue du Chemin de Fer and Faubourg de Bruxelles.

Line M4 or Gilly line

It stretches from Gilly to Charleroi. Line 4 has premetro 6 stations of wich 4 circulate underground and 2 ground level. It runs counter clockwise. The route is 4 kms long.
Stations: Samaritaine, Gazomètre, Gilly, Marabout, Sart-Culpart and Soleilmont.

Frequency of service

Standard frequency is 30 minutes in M1 and M2 lines. 15 minutes in Charleroi to Petria section. Weekends and holidays frequency is 60 minutes. M4 lines frequency is 10 minutes from monday to saturdays and 15 minutes sundays and holidays, so as M3 line.

Curious facts

All trains hav an indicator LED with the line number and the destination station.

There are no barriers or staff to control passengers entering to the subway. Some stations have automatic ticket machines to sell the tickets. Others are inside trains. Until 2012 inspector charged directly.

The trains are equipped with a safety system that in case of overspeed warns the driver and if there is no response would stop the train automatically.

Anvers (Antwerp or Amberes) is the capital of the Antwerp of Flanders, one of the major destinations of Belgium.
Although Antwerp is a small town, it is also one of the most populated of Belgium, which makes public transportation
systems even more relevant.
Anyway you could also visit the main points on foot. Great part of the city historical center is a pedestrian zone.

Public transportation in Antwerp are operated by De Lijn.
In Anvers we have a network of buses, the Tram Network and the Premetro.
The Premetro is just an underground part of the Antwerp Tramway Network.
Exactly 6 of the 12 lines of the entire system run underground.

Premetro lines run underground in the city center along the main street, Diamant under de Central Stations, until they get
Groenplaats. From here the lines continue under the Scheldt River to ground level on Linkeroever.

Known as: Premetro

Lines: 6 (lines 2,3,5,6,9 and 15 of the tramway network)

Stations: 11

Length: 7,6kms (4,7 mi)

Official Website: http://www.delijn.be/

Premetro Lines and Stations

Premetro stations:

Line 4 or light blue: goes from Hoboken (Kioskplaats) to Silsburg.

Line 5 or burgundy: goes from Wijnegem to Linkeroever (P&R).

Line 6 or pink: goes from Metropolis to Olympiade.

Line 7 or blue: goes from Sint Pietersvliet to Mortsel (Gemeenteplein).

Line 9 or orange: goes from Linkeroever (P&R) to Deurne (Eksterlaar).

Advise

Stad buses (city buses) and streek buses (regional buses) depart from Franklin Rooseveltplaats or from Koningin Astridplein.
Make sure wich direction are you going, because normally bus and trams routes start at one side of the city
and finish on the other. So maybe you are going to be on the right bus or tram but going on the opposite direction.

Connection to the Airports

Antwerp International Airport is located in the district of Deurne, 2 km away from the city of Antwerp.

Brussels metro is the most modern on the continent. Construction began in 1970 and the first line opened in 1976.

The Brussels metro is operated by the STIB, the Intercommunal Transport Company of Brussels.Currently, the subway system is composed of 6 different lines but actually they are four metro lines and two light rail (or trams), with 56 kms of tracks and 69 stops (including all subway and light rail).

Brussels Metro Lines

In the most central part of Brussels all lines go in pairs, ie, the same route is made by two different lines, so in the practice it is as if actually there are only three lines.

Lines 1 and 5: run Brussels from east to west. Line 1 runs from Gare de l’Ouest station ( west of Brussels) to Stockel (at the eastern endl). Line 5 runs from Erasme (south-west of Brussels) to Herrmann-Debroux (south-east)

Lines 2and 6: they are circular lines. Line 2 starts and ends at Simonis. Line 6 runs from Roi Baudouin / Koning Boudewijn (north-west Brussels) to Simonis.

Lines 3 and 4: are tram lines. They run through the city via the north-south axis. Interesting to arrive from the train station Gare du Midi to downtown Brussels. Line 3 runs from Churchill (south of the city) to Esplanade in the north. Line 4 runs from Gare du Nord train station (in the north) to Stalle in the south.

Metro Opening Hours:

The subway schedule is:
From 05:30 a.m to 24:00. On Saturdays, Sundays and holidays the subway begins operating at 06:00 a.m in the morning. Some lines such as 3 and 4 begin to operate daily at 05:00 am.

Frequency Step

The frequency is between 6 to 10 minutes during the day. Until 06:00 a.m and after 23:00 p.m frequency decreases to 20 minutes. Because as mentioned, the route of the lines is repeated the frequencies are reduced by half.

Fares and Tickets

All tickets we discussed here are valid for the metro, buses and trams.

Let´s see some fares:

Single Ticket: 1,80€ (2€ with transshipment). This tickets are valid for an hour since they are validated. During that time, you can make line changes or conveyance.

Return Ticket: 3,50€, (must return in the following 24 hours)

5 single tickets: 7,50€.

10 single tickets: 13.00€.

1 Day Pass: 6€, The validity is considered by complete day, not for 24-hour periods. That is, validating the ticket one day in the afternoon, that night expires. This ticket allows an unlimited number of journeys on the entire public transport network of trams, buses, trains and the underground within Brussels until the end of service (except for the NATO-Brussels Airport section of lines 12 and 21)

Brussels Card is a tourist card that includes free access to over 30 museums and monuments and allows unlimited use of public transport in Brussels during its validity.

Children

Maximum 4 children per adult travel for free. Every child under six can travel for free as long as they are accompanied by an adult with a valid ticket. Each additional child pays for the journey.

Children aged 6-11 can travel for free at any time on the entire STIB network (except between NATO-Brussels Airport of lines 12 and 21) with the J-ticket. You only pay a refundable deposit of 5 euros.

Airport:

Brussels Airport (Brussels International Airport) is in Zaventen, 14 kilometers from the city of Brussels.

To move from the Zaventem airport to the center of Brussels, the best option is to do it by train.

– Trains: From the airport train station (one level below the terminal) trains run every 10 minutes to Brussels Nord station, Brussels Midi and Brussels Sud. The first train leaves at 06:00 and the last one does at 00:00. The journey lasts between 15-20 minutes, depending on which station we head to. If we go to the center of Brussels the best is to go directly to Gare du Midi.

-Buses: Buses depart from the parking place in front of the Terminal (Level 0). They only stop in Brussels central station, Gare du Midi. From this station you can take the metro, tram or urban bus. They do not have intermediate stops and leave every 30 minutes.
