At present, Essen Stadtbahn is operated through 3 lines, namely, U11, U17 and U18. Together they cover 45 stations. The track length is nearly 20 km. Essener Verkehrs-AG (EVAG), a public undertaking under Essen city authority, operates the lines in collaboration with transport companies of the other two cities.

Historical Background

After the World War II, planning started to construct an underground tramway as a solution to the road traffic congestion. It was later supposed to be upgraded to a U-Bahn system. The construction started in the early 1960s and the first section, an 8 km long track between the Essen inner city and Mülheim-Heißen was opened for revenue service on 28 May 1977. Further stations and lines were added subsequently and the system achieved its current length in September 2011.

Construction of the Essen Standtbahn was vital to facilitate connectivity within the Rhein-Ruhr region. As the system started operation,

• Northern suburbs of Essen got easily connected to Gelsenkirchen.
• Altenessen was directly connected to Mülheim and the Rhein-Ruhr-Zentrum.
• Students got a convenient connection between Essen Hauptbahnhof and the University of Essen.

Hours of Operation

On weekdays, U-Bahn runs from 4:30 AM till 11 PM. On Saturdays, the system operates from 7 in the morning and on Sundays and holidays, from 8 in the morning. On weekdays, the headway is 10 minutes and on weekends and holidays 15 minutes.

Lines and Stations

The system is partly underground, partly elevated. 9.8 km of the total track lies at the underground level. This section runs under the city center area. The section between Berliner Platz and Essen Hauptbahnhof is covered by all three lines. Between Karl Platz and Berliner Platz, only U11 and U17 are operational. The areas between Bismarkplatz and Essen Hauptbahnhof are served by both U17 and U18. The rest of the sections have only one line.

U18 runs completely segregated from other lines and offers no transfer possibilities to any other mode of public transport. For the other two lines, only the elevated tram lines allow interchange. Passengers can transfer to other U-Bahn, tram, bus and railway lines.

The lines are numbered such a way that they indicate the type of transport (U-Bahn), the number of the area served (1 for Essen and Mülheim) and the number of the tram line (1, 7 and 8 respectively).

U11

This line serves as an important mode of transport between Gurga Park, Messe and Altenessen. There are total 23 stations along this line including: Messe, Rüttenscheid , Essen Hauptbahnhof , Altenessen, E-Karnap, GE-Buerer Strasse.

U17

The line connects Margarethenhoehe in the south of Essen to Karlsplatz in Altenessen. It is a relatively shorter line and connects only 17 stations. Main stations along the line are: Margarethenhöh, Holsterhausen, Essen Hauptbahnho, Berliner Platz, Karlsplatz

U18

It runs from Essen to Mulheim an der Ruhr. It is more of a rapid transit line with mostly above ground sections. Mülheim Hauptbahnhof is the most important station on this line offering transfer to Duisburg tram lines. Giving easy access to many of popular shopping areas of the region, the line got its nickname Shopping Line. It also runs through 17 stations including: Mülheim Hauptbahnhof, Ruhr-Zentrum , MH-Rhein, Essen Hauptbahnhof, Berliner Platz

Expansion

There are plans to expand the system further.

• U17 may be extended after Margarethenhoehe another three new stations.
• U11 may also be extended in the southern direction.
• In place of high-floor trams, low-floor trams will be introduced.
• Essen Stadtbahn, in near future, is going to connect to Düsseldorf International Airport.

Fare and Ticket

The fare of the system is calculated similarly to any other Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr transport system. There are fare slabs that vary with the distance traveled. For traveling up to 3 stations, passengers can use short distance tickets for 1.60 Euro each. For the entire city, there is the class A ticket, which costs 2.60 Euro. With class D ticket, a passenger can travel to any area within the VRR region. Children aged between 6 to 14 years pay the same fare, irrespective of the distance traveled.

VRR offers varied ticketing options including single journey tickets, day tickets, semester tickets, 7-day tickets etc. Tickets can be purchased either online or from ticket vending machines located at the stations. Remember, Stadtbahn drivers sell no tickets.

• The system is fully accessible. Even the high platforms are disabled-friendly.
• Announcements are in German and English.
• Ticket vending machines have instructions in English also.

Rules

To let the system function smoothly, the authority has set certain rules. These rules also apply to other EVAG transport systems.

• A day ticket is valid from the time of purchase till 3 AM on the next day.
• To buy tickets using your mobile, you have to register yourself in the EVAG database.
• Smoking is generally prohibited on platforms and on the U-Bahn. To smoke while in the platform, you must go to the designated areas.

Munich U-BAHN schedule and frequency:

Start to run at 4:15am and finish to 1:30am, it pass every 5 minutes in rush hours and avery 10 minutes in the rest of the day. After 00:00am it passes every 20 minutes, and the weekend is every half hour.

Munich S-BAHN schedule and frequency:

Is every 20 minutes. On parts of some branches during peak hours there is a 10 minute frequency produced by added trains. A special case is the line to Erding, where on weekdays a mix of express trains from Erding and normal S-Bahn trains from Markt Schwaben runs in the morning peaks, producing a 10 minute frequency west of Munich East station.

How to use U-BAHN and S-BAHN in Munich

Tickets can be purchased from a vending machine in any U-Bahn or S-Bahn station.
There are 4 types of tickets:

• Einzelfahrkarten (single-journey point-to-point tickets) are the most expensive. With Einzelfahrkarten You can use 4 different types of transportation ( S-Bahn, U-Bahn, and tram or bus) if you wish.
• Single-Tageskarten and Partner-Tageskarten, or single and partner day tickets, allow unlimited transportation from the time you buy it until 6 am the next day. There are individual tickets and tickets for groups of up to 5 people.
• CityTour Card one-day or three-day versions, for either the proper city or the entire Munich area. In addition to unlimited public transportation, it entitles you to discounts at many museums and other attractions.

You can pay for tickets with credit card at the MVG ticket machines located in U-Bahn (underground) stations or in MVG customer service centres or at the ticket machines located at Munich Airport.

You can validate your ticket or City Tour Card in the blue time-stamping machines near the station entrance or you can be fined otherwise. There are no turnstile. Just you will need to show your ticket to inspectors in the trains.

One thing to be aware is that in a few central locations, such as the Hauptbahnhof, there are two platforms: right-hand doors are for leaving, and left hand doors are for people boarding.

From Munich to the Airport

Munich Airport can be reached on the S8 line via Ostbahnhof and Ismaning, S1 branch with transfer to U2 at Feldmoching.
The S-Bahn trains run between the city’s two central railroad stations (the Hauptbahnhof and the Ostbahnhof) and provide frequent transportation between the city and Munich International Airport. The Airport-City Day Ticket is available as a single ticket or as a partner ticket for up to 5 people.

This is 24×7 system. All lines are open 24 hours a day, every single day of the year.

From monday to friday, trains came every 5-10 minutes during 06:00 to 20:00 h. After 01:00 there is almost no service.

Saturday and sundays there is a night service with a train every hour. Because of some lines has overlapping stations
the services could be more frequent.

Connection to the Airports

Cologne/Bonn airport (CGN) is about 15 min by S-Bahn to Cologne downtown. It’s 1 zone (1b) and the prize of the ticket is €2.70.
This single ticket (Einzelfahrten) are sold by ATM machines and cand also be used in trams.

Bönn Metro Lines

Including the entire public transport system (metro, trains, trams and buses) the Stadbahn Cologne-Bönn, moves eighty million passengers a year.

Metro stations are marked with a large blue "U" and buses and trams with an "H" (Haltestelle).

Currently there are six lines in operation, although two of them just do it partially, as reinforcement.

• Lines 16 and 18: link the cities of Bönn and Cologne. The 16 runs from Cologne to Bad Godesberg, and line 18 from Cologne to Bönn Hauptbahnhof.
• Line 63: runs from Tannenbusch to Bad Godesberg
• Line 66: runs from Siegburg to Bad Honnef, is known as "Telekom Express".
• Line 67: only works on weekdays and in the morning, during school hours, runs from Siegburg to Bad Godesber.
• Line 68: has a limited service, during the week days runs from Bornheim to Ramersdorf, but on weekends line ends at Bonn Hauptbahnhof.

The Bönn Stadtbahn is integrated into the tariff system VRS (Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Sieg), which also includes the city of Cologne. Prices for the city of Bönn are fare 1b. To buy a ticket all you need to know is whether we will move only within the city or neighboring cities. The price level 1b is for travel within the city of Bonn and Cologne.The fine for traveling without a ticket or unvalidated ticket is 30€

Allows to use unlimited metro for a day in the tariff area, valid until 03.00 am on the day after purchase. It costs 7.50€

1 Day card for 5 people

Valid for a small group of up to five people. They can travel unlimited from 00:09 am until 03:00 am the day after in the ticket fare zone, whether they are children or adults.
Children under age 5 are free, even if the group is over 5 people. It costs 11.10€

The Welcome Card allows unlimited use of public transport in Bönn and Cologne, as well as access to more than 40 attractions and 20 museums in the region, and discounts on other attractions. There are modalities for 1 and 3 days for the price of 12.30€ and 23.50€ respectively. For groups of two adults and up to four children at a price of 16.40€ for one day.

Airport

Bonn has no airport , you have to scroll to Cologne. The Konrad Adenauer Flughafen Airport is shared for Cologne and Bönn, and is located 25 km north of the city.

It is connected to the main railway station (Zentraler Omnibusbahnhof Bonn – ZOB, Maximilianstraße, opposite Hauptbahnhof) by bus line SB 60 Airport Express, which runs every 30 minutes on weekdays and every 60 minutes on weekends. The journey takes about 30 minutes and the ticket price is 6.60€.

It was inaugurated on 1912 and it is owned and operated by the “Hamburger Hochbahn AG” except the section Garstedt – Norderstedt Mitte, which is owned by the Verkehrsgesellschaft Norderstedt (VGN) but also operated by the Hamburger Hochbahn AG.

Most important stations

The main station is the Hamburg Hauptbahnhof, as it is the central station of long distance trains, subway (U-Bahn) and suburban railway (S-Bahn). It is divided into two stations: Hauptbahnhof Süd serving lines U1 and U3 and Hauptbahnhof Nord serving the U2 and U4 lines.
Another important one is Ohlsdorf station, through which pass the U1 and S1 (train) lines.It is the nearest station to Hamburg Airport. From there is a shuttle bus every 10 minutes to get to airport enclosures.

Opening Hours

The subway schedule is 04:30 a.m. to 01:00 a.m. Sunday through Thursday, and Friday and Saturday all night long in most of its sections.

Frequency Step

Runs every 5-10 minutes in the most central lines and in peripheral U1 line it has as a frequency of up to 20 minutes. The night of Friday to Saturday and Saturday to Sunday in most of the sections run all night with a frequency of 20 minutes.

Group Ticket

It is a very interesting ticket which is valid for unlimited travel for up to five people, but it is worth when using only two of them. With the same validity as Ticket 09:00 a.m. Ticket can be purchased from 10.40€

Allows unlimited use of public transport in Hamburg as well as access to various attractions and discounts. For a day costs 8.90 € , 21.90 € for three days

Airport

The Hamburg Airport is located only 9 km north of the city, in Fuhlsbüttel.
The way to access the city or the airport by metro is with the U1 Line from Ohlsdorfdesde station. There is a shuttle bus service called Airport Express 110 that connects every 10 minutes with the terminals (cost about 3 €)

You can also access the airport with regular buses: HVV 26 (Farmsen – S-Rahlstedt), 172 (Barmbek – Uhlenhorst), 292 (Langenhorn – U-Ochsenzoll) and night line 606 (Langenhorn – U-Ochsenzoll – Hauptbahnhof – Rathausmarkt), as well as express services to Hauptbahnhof Jasper, running every 15-20 minutes from 04:40 a.m to 21:20 p.m a.from the city center and from 05:39 a.m 23:54 p.m from terminals 1 and 4 of the airport
The price of a single ticket is 5 €, 8 € return, under 12, 2€. It takes approximately 25 minutes to make the journey.

Nüremberg Metro Lines

Composed of 3 lines, 46 stations and a network lenght of 36 kilometres.

• Line U1: going from station Fürth Hardhöhe to station Langwasser Süd (18.5 kms and 27 stations)
• Line U2:: going from station Flughafen/Airport to station Röthenbach (13.2 kms and 16 stations). In September 2009 became operational automatic driverless trains with the aim that all trains would be automatic in 2010. It is a totally undergrounded line.
• Line U3: going from station Gustav-Adolf-Straße to station Fiedrich-Ebert-Platz (7kms and 11 stations). It is the newest of the lines and began operating in June 2008. It is a fully automaticaly operated line.
  This line is being expanded to the north and south and it is expected to be operative in 2013.

To increase the pass frequency at peak hours, and only in the Nüremberg city central areas, there are to reinforcement lines: line U11 running between Eberhardshof and Messe,(i.e; Nüremberg main station, main pedestrian shopping street of the city and Plärrer) and line U21 between Röthenback and Ziegelstein.

Hauptbahnhof, is the central staction for long distance trains, U-bahn and S-Bahn. The three lines pass trought this station.
Fruthermore Plarrer station is also important because around here pass the whole three metro lines and transhipments can be easily made.

Tickets and Fares

Nüremberg U-Bahn is operated by VAG (VerkehrsAG Nüremberg) and is part of the VGN (Verkehrsverbund Großraum Nuremberg) tariff system wich integrates buses, trams, metro, S-Bahn, and regional trains of the Deutsche Bahn.

There are different tickets and passes and the price will depend mainly of the number of zones in wich we want to travel.

For the central Nüremberg and Fürth covered by the U-Bahn folloing prices apply:

Single Ticket

Valid during 90 minutes for a single trip. You may change at stops or interrupt your journey as you please, but return-rides or round-trips are not possible. It is 2.40€ for adults and 1.10€ for children.

5 Tickets for Nüremberg/Fürth/Stein (zone A)

The 5-strips-ticket is a discounted multi-trip-ticket which is offered for the pay scale area Nuremberg/ Fürth/ Stein with the same terms and conditions than Single Tickets.

5 Short Trip Ticket.

There is an special ticket for short trips (2 or 3 stops). It is 7.10€ for adults and 3.60€ for children. It is necessary to always validate ticket. Validating machines are located in the accesses to platforms, elevators and stairs.On buses they are inside.

10 Trip Pass.

It can be used for more than one passenger at the same time and number of tickets to stamp and validate will depend on the zones of the trip. Price is 9.70€ for adults and 4.70€ for children.

1 Day Ticket

For only 4,80 EUR per day individual persons in Nuremberg, Fürth and Stein are mobile all day and unlimited number of rides.
If you buy your ticket on a Saturday, you can travel also the Sunday for free. Meaning you can travel the whole weekend without paying any more.

1 Día Plus ticket

For families, It is valid for two adults and up to four children (under 18 years) for a day or a whole weekend! The DayTicket Plus for Zone A, valid in Nuremberg, Fürth and Stein only costs 8,00 EUR.
The DayTickets are valid only on the day of issue (and the following Sunday, if bought on a Saturday), they are not 24-hour-tickets.

Mobicard

With the transferrable MobiCard you can ride as often as you like within its fare zone. From 09.00 a.m you may even take one adult and up to four children (under 18 years) with you. The MobiCard is available for all fare zones in three different versions:

Airport:

The Nüremberg Airport is located 8 kms in the north of the city.

From the main station to the airport it takes only 12 minutes without scales with the (U2) metro line. With a 10-15 minutes frequency and a fare of 2.40€.

Also in front of the airport terminal is the bus stop. Line 32 runs every hour to the center of Nüremberg (vía Thon) and Line 33 also circulates hourly to Nüremberg-Buch.

Bielefeld is a medium size city, between Hanover and Dortmund. Its transport system is much like its neighboring cities: Stuttgart, Cologne, Hanover, … The system has 7 underground stations. First one opened in 1971, Beckhausstraße station. Later the Jahnplatz and Hauptbahnhof stations, Wittekindstraße, Nordpark, Babenhausen Süd. Hauptbahnhof, Siegfriedplatz and Rudolf-Oetker-Halle.

There are night-buses running the rail routes hourly so, just in weekends, there is a 24-hour-service.

The Wuppertal Schwebebahn, as it is known, moves 25 million passengers per year. It is the oldest monorail transport system with wagons suspended in the world. It is an unique system. Over a distance of 13.3 kilometers, the light rail in Wuppertal flows through the Wupper Valley area between the two terminal stations: Rittershausen (currently Oberbarmen) and Vohwinkel, floating above the Wupper river for 10 kilometers at 12 meters above the ground. The section between Sonnborner Straße and Vohwinkel, above the streets of Vohwinkel, circulates at 8 meters along a distance of 3.3 km.

An end to end trip takes about 30 minutes and serves 20 stations.

There are 18 trains running during rush hour and regular times. Only in the evenings / nights there are 11 trains.

Monthly Transferible Pass: called Ticket 2000, this pass is transferible and allows the transportation of a bicycle. With the same caracteristiques in all the refered to the families than the Ticket 1000. Price is 49,30€ and 35,40€ for use out of the peak hour.

Airport:

Dortmund airport is only 13 kms away from the city center.There is an hourly express bus service that ends in the "Zentraler Omnibus Bahnhof" just in front of the Dortmund central Station (Hauptbahnhof )

It takes 25 minutes and it is the fastest way to reach the center.

Adults: 6.50 €

Children from 6 to 14 years: 2€

Children younger than 6 years travel for free.

The first express bus departs from Dortmund bus station at 04.30 a.m and the last departs at 22.00 hours. Airport is also reachable taking the rail line Dortmund vía Aplerbeck, it takes around 45 minutes.

Gelsenkirchen Metro Lines

BOGESTRA serves the cities of Bochum, Herne and Gelsenkirchen in the Ruhr valley. None of these three cities has its own system. The Rhein-Ruhr Stadtbahn serves this area since 1970.

The Stadtbahn U35 line covers most of the area between the cities of Bochum and Herne area, circulating underground. Only in the south, arriving at the Ruhr University, the line circulates on the surface.

There is a second route arriving to the center of Bochum which serves the lines 308 and 318 with 4 underground stations.

The third route mainly serves the center of Gelsenkirchen city. It is a tram line with 7 underground stations, the line 301 (Gelsenkirchen Hbf, Buer, GE-Horst). In the center of Bochum this route has 4 underground stations: Bochumer Verein / Jahrhunderthalle, Rathaus Süd, Hauptbahnhof and Lohring. This stretch is also used by the tram line 302 (Gelsenkirchen – Bochum-Laer) and 310 (Bochum-Höntrop – Witten).
