Malaga Metro currently has 2 lines along the most important areas of the city. It has a total of 17 stations, 12 underground and 5 on surface and a total of 11.3 kms. It is a modern, safe and environmentally friendly light trains system.
The 2 lines are interconnected at the station of El Perchel, which becomes the transport hub of the city, as from here you can access other transport systems, such as AVE (high speed train), suburban and regional train services of Renfe and intercity bus station.
Remaining infrastructure (Estación Guadalmedina in 2016, Atarazanas and Civil Hospital, 2017) is expected to be completed on 2017 . The network will have other 14.8 kilometers in length and 23 stations serving a population of 216,000 inhabitants and over 20 million users per year.
The project Metro Málaga needs an investment of over 600 million euros and is funded by the Junta de Andalucía, together with the Central Government and the collaboration of the city of Malaga.

Malaga metro lines and stations
The two metro lines are L1 (red line) and L2 (blue line):
Line L1: has a total of 11 stations along 6.7 kms of tracks. This line runs underground about 4.5 kms and 2,2kms over surface. Stacions:
El Perchel, La Unión, Barbarela, Carranque, Portada Alta, Ciudad de Justicia, Universidad, El Clínico, Cónsul, Paraninfo y Andalucía Tech.
Line L2: 7 stations along 4.6 kms underground tracks. This line connects the most populated areas of Malaga, as the Carretera de Cádiz. Stations:
Palacio de los Deportes, Puerta Blanca, La Luz – La Paz, El Torcal, Princesa – Huelin, La Isla y El Perchel.
There is a line under construction linking El Perchel with Guadalmina and other projected between Atarazanas and the Civil Hospital. There will be underground stations in La Malagueta, Sancha, Baños del Carmen, Juan Valera, Pedregalejo, Market, El Palo.
Malaga Metro tickets, cards and rates
The normal price of a single ticket is 1.35 €. But there are several cards that you can use to save a significant amount of the ticket.
- Billete ocasional: can be refilled with 9 tickets.
- Tarjeta monedero: ticket price is 0,82€. You can fill this card with money. Minimum 5 euros and maximum 25
- Tarjeta monedero del consorcio de transportes: ticket price 0,82. If a transfer from a bus the price is 0.66 €. This card can recharge money and also allows the use of other public transport systems in Malaga.
- Family card: Variable discounts.
Tickets and cards are purchased and recharged at vending machines at stations, with cash and credit cards for amounts greater than 5 euros.
After buying a single ticket has a period of 90 minutes before use.
Metro Malaga Schedule
Metro Málaga working hours are Monday through Thursday from 6:30 to 23:00. On Friday and eves, service continues until 01:30. Saturday operates from 7am to 1:30 and Sundays and holidays from 7:00 to 23:00.
During the Feria de Agosto and Easter times vary. Check on their website.
Frequency
The frequency step of the Málaga metro ranges from 7-10 minutes.
Curious facts
You are allowed to carry a bike whenever possible (not crowded trains). 2 bikes allowed per car.
Financial problems due to the crisis are delaying the completion of the works.
